Butler, John Ammi was born on October 14, 1851 in Milwaukee. Son of Ammi R. R. and Orvilla L. (Tanner) Butler.
Bachelor of Arts, Yale, 1874. Studied at Göttingen and Leipzig.
Admitted to bar, 1877, and practiced at Milwaukee. Retired, 1884, traveled abroad, 1885-1891. Then occupied with civic reform work.
Founder Milwaukee Municipal League, 1894 (president 8 terms), Milwaukee City Club, 1909 (1st president), Wisconsin Civ. Service League, 1905 (president). Member Executive Committee National Municipal League, Council National Civ.
