Manager Haverford College, 1872-1914 (president pro tem. 1890-1891); manager Pennsylvania Hospital, 1879-1909.

Trustee Bryn Mawr College, 1885-1902. Appointed commissioner to locate Osage Indians by President Johnson, 1866.

Chairman 1st Mohonk International Arbitration Conference, 1895.
