Rathbun, John Charles was born on March 14, 1882 in Mondovi, Wisconsin, United States. Son of John Chauncey and Elizabeth (Goldenberger) Rathbun.

Superintendent bridge construction City of Seattle, 1915-1918. Supervising draftsman, bridge and building department, C.,M. & St.P. Railway, Seattle, 1918. Assistant professor civil engineering, U. Washington, 1919-1925.

Hydraulic investigator City of Seattle, 1920. Peters fellow research laboratory, Columbia, 1923-1924. Head department, professor civil engineering South Dakot School Mines, Rapid City, 1925-1929.
