Studied at Clifton College. Dublin University (Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts) Entered the Prussian Army, and appointed Lieutenant 16th Hanoverian Dragoons, 1875. Transferred to Hessian Guard Dragoons, 1877.
Enlisted 1st Life Guards, 1878.
Lieutenant and Adjutant 19th Hussars, 1881. Served Egyptian campaign, 1882 (medal and clasp, battle of Tel-el-Ivebir, bronze star). Captain, 1884; Nile Expedition, 1884-1885 (clasp, despatches, Brevet-Major).
Joined reserve of officers, 1894. Commanded 15th Company Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa, 1900, and was present at the operations under Sir Archibald Hunter at Roidam and Fourteen Streams (medal and clasps). 2nd Class Royal Crown of PruHsia.
Coronation medal and officer of Order of Leopold II. Serjeant-at-Arms, 1901-1907. Sword - Bearer to the Corporation of the City of London since 1907.
