Began as office boy in a Providence cotton manufacturer’s office, later clerk for a commission firm in New New York Cashier First National Bank of Burlington, 1874-1877. Coal mining, 1877-1882.
In 1882 reported on coal resources of Colorado and became more extensively identified with coal and iron interests.
Organized Colorado Fuel Company, 1887, later consolidated with the Colorado Coal & Iron Company, forming the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, which he organized, 1892, and of which he was president or chairman of board till June 24, 1903 (resigned).
