Barrette, John Davenport was born on May 14, 1862 in in Louisiana. Son of John Dunsworth and Margaret Elizabeth (Maybanks) Barrette.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1885.


Commissioned Second lieutenant 3d Artillery, June 14, 1885. Promoted through grades to brigadier general National Army, August 5, 1917. Brigadier general United States of America, February 2, 1918.

Retired May 14, 1926. Instructor of mathematics, United States Military Academy, 1892-1896. Instructor Artillery School, 1903-1907.

Director department artillery and gun defense, Coast Artillery School, Fort Monroe, Virginia, 1907-1909. Commanded Fort McKinley, 1910. Commanding artillery district of Charleston, lieutenant colonel 1st Provisional Regiment, Coast Artillery, and coast defense officer Eastern Department, 1911.
