Background

Shafer, John Douglas was born on December 5, 1848 in Allegheny Company, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Alexander Geary and Maria D. (Harner) Shafer.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Washington and Jefferson College, 1866.

Career

Teacher at W. Alexander and McKeesport, Pennsylvania, 1866-1871. Professor Greek, Westminster College, 1871-1873. Admitted to bar, 1874.

Practiced at Pittsburgh. Dean, Pittsburgh Law School from its foundation, 1895-1920, dean emeritus. Appointed by governor judge Court of Common Pleas, Allegheny Company, May 1897.

Elected 1897, and reëlected, 1907 and 1917. Appointed president judge, 1915, for term ending 1927. Trustee Vice-President Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh.
