( This magnificent volume offers a richly illustrated sur...)
This magnificent volume offers a richly illustrated survey of art in Scotland, from 1460 to the current day. Its main emphasis is on painting and the graphic arts, and its scope clearly establishes the place of visual art in Scottish culture. Placing in perspective the impact of the Reformation and the richness of late medieval art, the book then follows the growth of art in the new Protestant culture through the 17th century. It culminates with the glorious achievements of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, of painters such as Ramsay, Raeburn, Mackintosh, and Wilkie. A splendid volume that establishes the claim of Scottish art to a distinct identity and that changes our understanding of the wider history of European art.

Elizabeth Blackadder is one of the most popular and respected artists at work today in the British Isles. Her work ranges through still life, landscape and flower painting. She lives and works in Scotland and belongs to the tradition of Scottish painters like William Gillies, one of her teachers, and Anne Redpath. She has exhibited in London and elsewhere since the early sixties and her paintings are known to a wide audience through extensive reproduction. Elizabeth Blackadder is the first woman to be elected to both the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy. This book explores the development of Elizabeth Blackadder's art in all its richness. It is illustrated with 71 colour and 14 black and white reproductions and it is published in a standard and in a limited edition. A chronology, selected bibliography, lists of solo and selected group exhibitions, and works in public collections provide valuable reference material.
