Peterson, John E. was born on December 25, 1938 in Titusville, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Axel Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth (Baker) Peterson.


Graduate from rural leadership progressive, Pennsylvania State University.


Owner retail food market, Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, 1958-1984. Member Pleasantville City Council, 1969—1977, Pennsylvania State House Representatives from 65th district, 1977-1984, Pennsylvania State Senate from 25th district, 1984-1996, United States Congress from 5th Pennsylvania district, 1997—2009, member appropriations committee, co-chair Congressional Rural Caucus. Member Public Health and Welfare Committee, now chairman;active PENNVEST Board, Pennsylvania Hardwoods Development Council.

Secretary Center Rural Pennsylvania. Served in United States Army, 1957-1963.
