(New Zealand Revisited CHAPTER I THE VOYAGE IN the autumn ...)
New Zealand Revisited CHAPTER I THE VOYAGE IN the autumn of 1906 theB ritish Government invited me to go toN ew Zealand asS pecial Commissioner, to represent them at the opening of an International Exhibition at Christchurch, New Zealand. The opportunity of revisiting the scenes of early days was too tempting to be resisted. My public life had begun inN ew Zealand, as Civil Commissioner of theW aikato district under the late Sir George Grey, in the interval between the local insignificant Taranaki War of 1860 and the outbreak of the terrible war of races in 1863. The administration of law, such as there was, in theW aikato and all other territory outside theB ritish settlements was at that time carried on by theM aories themselves ;the Waikato district was very especially under the jurisdiction of theM aori King and his Runanga.
