Admitted to bar, 1857. Practiced at Georgetown, Missouri. Delegate Missouri Constitutional Convention, 1861.

Colonel 7th Missouri Cavalry United States.V., 1861-1865. Practiced law, Sedalia, Missouri, 1865-1882. Delegate Democratic National Convention, 1868.

Elected to 44th Congress (1875-1877). Reëlected to 46th Congress, January 10, 1880, for unexpired term (1880-1881) of A. M. Lay, deceased. Removed to Kansas City, 1882.

Supreme Court commissioner, 1883-1885. Presiding judge Kansas City Court of Appeals, 1885-1888. United States district judge, Western District Missouri, 1888-1910.

Retired. Delaware Pan-Presbyterian Convention, Edinburgh, 1877.
