Gilbert, John Gibbs was born on February 27, 1810 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Son of John Neal and Elizabeth (Atkins) Gilbert.


Made acting debut as Jaffies in Venice Preserved, Tremont Theatre, Boston, 1828. Played in New Orleans and Mississippi River towns, 1829-1834. Actor Tremont Theatre (associated with Booth family, Edwin Forrest, Thomas Hamblin, J.W. Wallack, Tyrone Power, Charlotte Cushman, Ellen Tree, others), Boston, also periodically manager, 1834-1847, played at Princess Theatre, London, Eng.

Actor Wallack’s Company. New York City, 1862-1888, Joseph Jefferson’s Company, 1888-1889. Played wide range of characters, notably Sir Peter Teazle, Sir Anthony Absolute, Old Dornton, Job Thornberry</td><tr><td class="label_burgverd11px"><b>Death</b></td></tr><tr><td> Died Boston, June 17, 1889.
