Goetschius, John Henry was born on March 8, 1718 in Bernick, Switzerland. Son of Maurice and Esther (Werndi) Goetschius.

Education

Studied theology with Review John Philip Dorsius, Neshaminy, Pennsylvania.

Career

Missionary, German Reformed Church in Pennsylvania, 1735, began preaching to German Reform settlers in Philadelphia, 1735. Refused ordination by Presbytery of Philadelphia, later ordained after studying theology, 1841. Served as minister in Dutch chs. on Long Island, New York, until 1748.

Submitted to reexamination and reordination when his ordination was contested, 1748. Colleague pastor Hackensack and Schraalinburgh, N. J., 1748-1774. An original trustee Queens College (now Rutgers University).
