Began business life, 1844, as dry goods clerk in Saint Louis. Crossed plains to Salt Lake City, 1849. Member mercantile firm Livingston & Kinkhead, 1849-1854.
Removed to California, 1854, and engaged in stock-raising.
In mercantile business, Marysville, California, 1856-1860, Carson City, Nevada, 1860. Treasurer Nevada Ty., 1862-1865.
Member 2 constitutional conversations which met to organize a State. Was in Alaska, 1867-1871.
Member 1st government expedition under Colonel J. C. Davis, appointed postmaster by President Johnson, and was first United States official holding civil office in Alaska.
Returned to Nevada, 1871. Engaged as miner and smelter at Unionville, and built other works. Founder Washoe City; governor Nevada, 1879-1883.
1st territorial governor Alaska, 1884-1885.
