Martindale, John Henry was born on March 20, 1815 in Hudson Falls, New York, United States. Son of Henry C. Martindale.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1835.


Admitted to New York bar, 1838. Organizer volunteer regts. in Civil War. Commissioned general United States Volunteers, 1861, served at battles of Yorktown, Mechanicsville, Gaine’s Mill, Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor, Bermuda Hundred.

Military governor District of Columbia. Brevetted major general volunteers, 1865. Attorney general New York, 1866-1868.

Vice president board of managers National Asylum of Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1868-1879.


Married Emeline Holden, June 16, 1840, 5 children.
