Graduate Dartmouth, 1830. Studied law under Larkin G. Mead, Chesterfield, New Hampshire (U.S.) Attended Andover (Massachusetts) Theological Seminary, 1831, Yale Theological Department, 1831-1834.
Organized free church with others at Yale as reaction against Calvinism, requested to leave Yale and refused license to preach because of his radical beliefs, 1834. Began a Bible school, Putney, Vermont, 1836. Promoted free love and promiscuity in his community, 1846.
Arrested on charge of adultery, broke bail, escaped to New New York
His community followed him and he established Oneida (New York) Community, 1848. Forced birth control and stirpiculture on members.
