Member of New York Senate, 1884-1885. Chairman judiciary committee Assembly, 1878. Chairman select commission to investigate New York State Normal Schools, 1878—report, which was widely circulated in this country and abroad, submitted to legislature, 1879.

Chairman select senate commission to investigate Consolidated Gas Company of New York City, 1885. Republican candidate secretary of state, 1889. Delegate at large New York Constitutional Convention, 1894.

Member board of trustees State Normal School, Potsdam, New York, since 1869. Editor (with Louis W. Pratt) Revised Edition (with notes), first 10 vols. New York Court of Appeals Report, 1887 (Albany).
