John Irwin Martin, American lawyer. member of state and city Dem.


Martin, John Irwin was born on May 24, 1848 in St. Louis. Son of William and Frances (Irwin) Martin.


Educated St. Louis public schools.


Elected to Missouri Legislature, 1871, and twice reëlected (speaker 1875). Admitted to Missouri bar, 1876, Supreme Court of the United States, 1879. In practice at St. Louis and Chicago.

Many years been member of state and city Democratic coms. Speaker in every national campaign from 1876. Sergeant-at-arms of Democratic National Committee, since 1892, and managed national convs. at Chicago, 1896, Kansas City, 1900, St. Louis, 1904, Denver, 1908.

Reëlected for committee and convention, 1912. Sergeant-at-arms National Rivers and Harbors Congress. Vice president Upper Mississippi River Improvement Chairman's Association commission on statutory legislation Missouri Fraternal Congress (composed of leading fraternal insurance associations).
