CALVERT, John Jackson was born on August 31, 1830. Son of Very Reverend T. Calvert, Doctor of Divinity, late Dean of Manchester, and Juliana, daughter of Sir Charles Watson, 1st Baronet.

Studied at Shrewsbury School. Brasenose College, Oxford.
Emigrated to New South Wales, 1853. Appointed to Colonial Secretary’s Department, 1853. On the inauguration of Responsible Government in the Colony in 1856 was transferred to the position of Clerk of Select Committees in the Legislative Assembly.
Some years later appointed First Clerk in the Legislative Council Office, and rose gradatim to present position.
