John James Peck, American army officer.


Peck, John James was born on January 4, 1821 in Manlius, New York, United States. Son of John Wells and Phoebe (Raynor) Peck.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy 1843.


Served with United States Army in battles of Palo Alto, Resaco de la Palma, Contreras, Churubusco, Maleria del Rey, during Mexican War. Resigned from United States Army, 1853. Treasurer New York, Newburgh & Syracuse Railroad Company.

President Syracuse (New York) Board Education, 1859-1861. Vice president Franklin Institute, Syracuse. Delegate Democratic National Convention, 1856, 60.

Twice nominated for United States Congress. Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1861, major general, 1862. Served in defenses of Washington, District of Columbia, 1861-1862.

Given command on Canadian frontier, 1864. Organizer New York State Life Insurance Company, 1867, pres.
