Jackson, John Jay was born on August 4, 1824 in Parkersburg, Virginia, United States. Son of General John Jay Jackson.
Graduate Princeton, 1845. Studied law; admitted to bar, 1847.
When Wirt Company was organized, 1848, was appointed its 1st prosecuting attorney. Appointed prosecuting attorney, Ritchie County, Virginia, 1849. Elected, 1851, reëlected succeeding term.
Member Virginia legislature. Elector on Whig ticket, 1852 and 1856, and on Bell and Everett ticket, 1860, for presidential elector. Appointed, 1861, United States judge, district of West Virginia, 1861-1905.
