Gaffney, John Jerome was born on March 5, 1891 in Charleston, South Carolina, United States. Son of Patrick John and Ellen Frances (O’Conner) Gaffney.


Bachelor of Arts, College of Charleston, 1912. Student St. Lawrence University (Brooklyn Law School), 1925-1926.


Entered supply corps, United States Navy, 1912. Promoted through grades to rear admiral, 1943. Served in Chinese waters, 1913-1916.

Built and managed naval clothing factory, Charleston, South Carolina., 1917. Secretary Virgin Islands, 1920-1923. Bought navy fuel, 1937-1939.

Staff commander Aircraft Battle Force, 1939-1941. Headed supply work ashore, Pearl Harbor, 1941-1945. Commander Naval Supply Depot, Oakland, California since August, 1945.


Married Wahneta Walsh, January 16, 1915. Children: John Jerome, Mary Yetive (Mistress Edward W. Bridewell), Gloria Louise (Mistress Francis Van Dyke Andrews), Lurline Loretta (Mistress Charles R. Eisenbach).
