John Jessop HARDWICK

Background

HARDWICK, John Jessop was born on September 22, 1831 in Bow-by-Stepney. Son of William Hardwick, Beverley, Yorkshire.

Education

Bow, under Reverend John Dawson. Studied under Royal Academicians, Redgrave, Herbert, and Danby.

Career

Apprenticed to Mr. Henry Vizetelly, draughtsman and engraver on wood, 1847. Attended School of Art, Somerset House (first prize for water-colour landscape painting from nature, 1851). On staff of The Illustrated London News, 1858.

First exhibited Royal Academy, 1860.

Friend of late John Ruskin, and assisted him with his classes at the Working Men's College, Great Ormond Street. Trustee and Churchwarden for Parish of Thames Ditton since 1881.

Membership

Associate Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours 1882.
