From the Introduction of this 59 page book: "This book}is an outgrowth of the highly successful 'Cumulative Writing Folder Program' and is the result of two decades' work with countless teachers and students in the areas of writing across the curriculum and thinking skills. It presents a model for a writing-across-the-curriculum/writing-to-learn program by defining five types of writing assignments and the outcomes expected for each. This program has been designed with real teachers working under real conditions. My goal is to give teachers, schools, and districts a unified program that can be used in all classrooms in all subject areas from grades four to twelve. To achieve this goal, the program provides techniques that require the student to be the intellectual worker in the room. This is a challenging, demanding program for students - not for teachers. This program is designed to help teachers in all content areas achieve their goals by requiring students to think on paper. This is accomplished by using frequent, usually short, writing assignments to increase students' involvement in lesson, check on their understanding of concepts, or promote their thinking about content. In addition to actively engaging students in the content of the course and requiring them to reflect on their approach to that content, the program can be used to refine listening and speaking skills."
