Studied at Public Schools, Sheffield and New Brompton. Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Master of Science.
Served apprenticeship in Chatham Dockyard. Took first place in scholarship competition, open to all apprentices, for entry into the Royal Naval 2131 College, Greenwich, 1881. Passed out three years later at head of all students leaving College in that year.
Took up position of Assistant Constructor at Chatham Dockyard. Junior Instructor in Naval Architecture at Royal Navy College, 1886. Senior Lecturer, 1890.
Joined stall of Director of Naval Construction at Admiralty, 1890. Inspector of Contract Work, 1895. Manager of Shipbuilding Department of Laird Brothers, now Cammell Laird and Company, 1899.
Professor of Naval Architecture, Armstrong College (in the University of Durham), Newcastle-on-Tyne, since 1907. M.I.N.A.
Member of Institution of Civil Engineers.
