Peyton, John Lewis was born on September 15, 1824 in near Staunton, Virginia, United States. Son of John Howe and Anne (Lewis) Peyton.
Graduated from the University Virginia, 1844.
Sent by President Willard Fillmore on secret mission to England, France and Austria, 1852. European agent for State of North Carolina, 1861-1865. Member Royal Geography Society.
