Dearing, John Lincoln was born on December 10, 1858 in Webster, Maine, United States. Son of Joseph Henry and Susan Vinton (Adams) Dearing.

Education

Bachelor of Arts, Colby College, 1884, A.M., 1894 (Doctor of Divinity, 1900). Graduate Newton Theological Institution, 1889.

Career

Ordained Baptist ministry, 1889. Went to Japan as missionary American Baptist Missionary Union, 1889. President and professor theology and ethics, Yokohama Baptist Theological Seminary, 1894-1908.

General missionary superintendent American Baptist Missionary Union for Japan, China and the Philippines, 1908-1911. Lectured in America, part of 1899-1900. Again in America, engaged in Laymen’s Missionary Movement, February 1909-August 1910.

Traveled extensively in China, 1910-1911. Director National Young Men’s Christian Association of Japan. Corresponding member Asiatic Society of Japan, Japan Society of London, Yokohama Literature Society (president 1912, 13).
