John M. Allston was born in 1824 at Scotland. He migrated to this country during his youth, and shortly after his arrival established a home in Pittsburgh.

Beginning as a draftsman, he entered the office of J. W. Kerr, pioneer architect in the city, and following a period of training and experience there, opened an office of his own. In the succeeding years Mr. Allston practiced his profession continuously until a few years before his death, when he retired. He was one of the charter members of the Pittsburgh Chapter, A.I.A., organized in 1891, and later was made a Fellow of the Institute,
