An examination of the intellectual roots of French foreign policy in Africa, concluding that only France has successfully remained faithful to its past imperialistic images of power and transformed them into current political discourse. John Chipman argues that continued French influence in Africa has been an essential aim of successive French republics. This takes the form of military and economic assistance agreements, which are justified with ex-colonial phrases stating "mutual interest" and "common destiny". The intensity with which France has acted in Africa is founded on an understanding that no other area of the world offers so congenial an environment for the perpetuation of French influence.
