Removed to Ashland County, O., 1835. Educated district school.
Removed with father’s family to South. Bend, 1851. In spring of 1852 entered employ of John Cotton, wagonmaker, of South. Bend. Made woodwork of a wagon, in winter of 1852, for which his brothers, Henry and Clem, made ironwork.
Gave this wagon to a company organized to go to California to pay for his share of the company’s expenses.
Party disbanded at Hangtown, California, August 31, 1853. Worked for H. L. Hines, a blacksmith, and was later his partner.
Returned to South. Send, 1858. Bought his brother Henry’s interest in firm of Studebaker Brothers, which then became C. & J. M. Studebaker (with brother Clem).
They later admitted two other brothers, P. East. and Jacob F., building up Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, of which became president, company operating largest vehicle works in the world.
