John Morris Ellicott, American naval officer. Recipient medal from Congress for services at Manila.


Ellicott, John Morris was born on September 4, 1859 in St. Inigoes, Maryland, United States. Son of James Fox and Elvira Ann (Jones) Ellicott.


Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, 1883. Studied United States Naval War College and Torpedo School.


Commissioned ensign United States Navy, 1885, retired as captain, 1912, recalled artive duty, 1918-1922. In flagship Tennessee, N. Atlantic station, 1883-1885. Expedition occupying Isthmus of Panama, 1885.

In Ranger, N. Pacific station, 1885-1888. Staff intelligence duty Navy Department, 1888-1891, Bennington, 1891-1893. On flagship Chicago, European station, 1894.

Instructor ordnance United States Naval Academy, 1894-1896. Marion and flagship Baltimore, Pacific station, 1896-1898. Flagship Baltimore, Asiaitc station, 1898-1899.

Staff Naval War College, 1900-1901. Participated in battle of Manila Bay, May 1. Navigator Prairie, 1901-1904.

Superintendent of compasses Navy Department, 1905-1906. Executive officer Maryland, Asiatic station, 1906-1907. Commanded Solace, 1908.

Inspector 13th Light House District, Portland, Oregon, 1909. Commanding United States Ship Maryland, 1911-1913. Navy Yard, Mare Island, California, 1914, captain, 1917-1920.
