Sully, John Murchison was born on July 5, 1868 in Dedham, Massachusetts, United States. Son of John and Agnes Eliza (Murchison) Sully.

With Nier & Hartford, engrs., Chattanooga, 1890-1892, Hebert & Company, Chattanooga, 1892-1893. Engineer and superintendent, Chickamauga Coal & Iron Company, 1894-1900. In charge mines, at Joplin, Missouri, 1900-1901, Hites Cove Mining Company, Mariposa.
