John's father died when he was 10 and he was raised by his mother, who stimulated his interested in Mexican history. Raised in a poor neighborhood, John excelled in academics and earned his A.B., M.A. and PhD from UC Davis. He married and was hired at 24 to teach at the college in his neighborhood. His lifelong commitment was to teach those who can not afford to go directly to University. In spite of discouragements by counselors, teachers and colleagues, he mentored over 10,000 students in his 42 year career. One of his hobbies is oboe. He married a teacher, has a daughter who is a teacher, a daughter who is a nurse at the public schools, and a son who is a musician and a composer. Since retirement in 2011 John has traveled throughout Europe, South America and the United States.
