John North WILLYS

Background

WILLYS, John North was born on October 25, 1873 in Canandaigua, New York, United States. Son of David Smith and Lydia (North) Willys.

Education

Public school education.

Career

Began in bicycle business, Canandaigua, 1890. Removed to Elmira, New York, and organized the Elmira Arms Company, also engaged in selling automobiles on an extensive scale. Purchased the Indianapolis plant of the Overland Automobile Company, 1907, and 2 years later purchased the Pope Toledo plant at Toledo.

Later Chairman of the Board and co-receiver The Willys-Overland Company, Toledo, also of Willys-Morrow Company, Elmira, New York. Ambassador to Poland, 1930-1932, resigned.
