Hoyt, John Philo was born on October 6, 1841 in Austinburg, Ohio, United States. Son of David and Susanah (Fancher) Hoyt.

Education

Educated district school and Grand River Institute, Austinburg. Served in Union Army, 1862-1866. Graduate Ohio State and Union Law College, Cleveland, 1867.

Career

Admitted to bar, 1867. Practiced in Tuscola Company, Michigan, 1867-1876. Prosecuting attorney, 1868-1872.

Member Michigan House of Representatives, 1873-1876 (speaker 1875). Secretary of Arizona Ty., 1876, governor, 1877. Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Washington Ty., 1879-1887.

President Washington Constitutional Convention, 1889. Justice Supreme Court of the Washington State, 1889-1897. Referee in bankruptcy, 1898-1914.
