Church, 1859; supplied church, Allensville, Indiana, 1859-1860. Having learned Dakota language when a child, followed his father into the missionary work, 1860, and continued lieutenant Devoted himself to preaching in Indian tongue.
Also labored for their material improvement.
Special United States agent for Flandreau Indians, 1873-1878. Spent much time in preparing Dakota publications.
Started an Indian periodical the Iapi Oaye, 1871, which was published many years.
