Reding was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1845). He served as naval storekeeper at Portsmouth, 1853–1858, and as mayor of Portsmouth in 1860. He died in Portsmouth, October 8, 1892, and was interred in Haverhill Cemetery, Haverhill, New Hampshire.
He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, 1867-1870.
