Kilpatrick, John Reed was born on June 15, 1889 in New York City. Son of Frank James and Manie (Patterson) Kilpatrick.


Graduate Phillip’s Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, 1907. Bachelor of Arts, Yale, 1911.


1 daughter, Frances Reed. Began as construction timekeeper Thompson Starrett Company, 1911, vice president, 1919. Vice president International Coal Products Corporation, 1919-1923.

Vice president George A. Fuller Company, 1923-1933. President Madison Square Garden Corporation, 1933-1955. Enlisted as private New York State National Guard, October 1912, advancing to Second lieutenant.

Major National Army, June 1917, advancing to colonel, General Staff, Advertising Educational Foundation and chief regulating officer, Advertising Educational Foundation. Honorary discharged March 1919. Recalled to active service, March 13, 1942, made brigadier general, United States Army, August 10, 1942.

Released from active duty October 1, 1945. Chairman of the Board Madison Square Garden Corporation.
