This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. Smith, John Rubens was born on January 23, 1775 in Covent Garden, London, England. Son of John Raphael and Hannah (Croome) Smith.
He later studied art at the Royal Academy. Smith emigrated to New York City from London about 1807. He depicted the United States in the decades before photography, and influenced a generation of American artists through his drawing academies and drawing manuals.
He died in New York City.
