Lockwood, John Salem was born on October 2, 1907 in Shanghai, China. Son of William Wirt and Mary Rebecca (Town) Lockwood.


Bachelor of Arts, De Pauw U., 1928. Doctor of Medicine Harvard, 1931. Medical Doctor of Science, College of Physicians and Surgical Columbia, 1937.


Intern in surgery Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, 1932-1934, junior and senior fellow in surgery, 1934-1937. Instructor in surgery and fellow in surgical research University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, 1937-1939, assistant professor surgical research, acting director department, 1942-1944. Associate in surgery and director tumor clinic Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, 1940-1942.

Professor surgery Yale, also associate surgeon New Haven Hospital, 1944-1946. Professor surgery Columbia University and attending surgeon Presbyterian Hospital, since 1946. Chief div. surgery, commission on medical research Office of Scientific Research and Development, Washington, 1944-1946.
