Career

Commissioned ensign, United States Navy, 1906. Promoted through grades to rear admiral, 1941, vice admiral, July 1943. Chief Bureau of Aeronautics, September 1942-July 1943.

Deputy chief naval operations for air, July 1943. Commander Carrier Task Force 38. Witnessed the Japanese surrender on board United States Ship Missouri, September 2, 1945.
