Career

September 30, 1874. Left college and enlisted as private Company B, 10th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, November 1864. Continued in army until surrender of General Joseph E. Johnston, April 26, 1865. Studied law in office of Judge Nathaniel Boyden, and in Judge Pearson’s law school, Richmond Hill, North Carolina.

Licensed to practice in County Court, 1866, in Superior and Supreme courts, 1867. Register of deeds, Rowan Company, North Carolina, 1866-1868. Member North Carolina House of Representatives, 1876, Senate, 1878-1900, 1902.

Elected by general assembly as member code commission, North Carolina, and served 3 years (code published, 1883). Member 49th to 53d Congresses (1885-1895), 7th North Carolina District. President People’s National Bank.
