Applegate, John Stilwell was born on August 6, 1837 in Middletown, New Jersey, United States. Son of Joseph Stilwell and Ann (Bray) Applegate.


Ancestors settled in Monmouth Company, New Jersey, in 17th century. Bachelor of Arts, Colgate, 1858 (Doctor of Laws, 1904). Studied law with Honorary William L. Dayton.


Admitted to New Jersey bar, 1861. Partner in practice with Honorary Henry M. Nevius, 1875-1879. Then member John S. Applegate & Son.

An incorporator New York, Atlantic & Highlands Railroad Company and president of same until its consolidation with Central R.R. of New Jersey. President 1st building and loan association in Red Bank, 1871-1875. President Red Bank Gas Light Company, since 1872.

Founder and president Second National Bank of Red Bank, 1875-1886.
