Northern university.
He studied at Princeton for one year, clerked in an Augusta law office, and was admitted to the bar in 1848. Before the war, he was a lawyer in Augusta, Georgia. During the war, he served in the Georgia State Senate and was elected to the second Confederate House in 1863.
Although he was supposed to have been a staunch administration supporter, Shewmake voted more than half of the time against the Davis administration’s war measures. He served on the Accounts and Naval Affairs Committees. His major work was in the area of impressment where he wanted to relieve livestock operatives from the obligation to furnish meat to the government.
Shewmake probably became an ally of Governor Brown. When the war ended, he returned to his Augusta law practice. He served two terms in the Georgia Senate from 1879 to 1883.
