Joined Cape Civil Service as a clerk in Colonial Secretary’s Office, 1860. Appointed Civil Commissioner and the Resident Magistrate, Queenstown, East London, Port Elizabeth, and other districts of the Colony. Was Commandant of European Mounted Volunteers Basuto War, 1880-1881, and Colonel Commanding Town Guard at East London, subsequently also Port Elizabeth during AngloBoer War, 1899-1003. Resident Magistrate, Cape Town and Cape District.
