Taking over the body of a dying native on another world who has just given up the ghost, astral traveler Jason Croft began his rise to power and his wooing of the Princess Naia in Palos of the Dog Star Pack. He saved her country and won her hand. But in this second novel in the Jason Croft trilogy, The Mouthpiece of Zitu, things get tricky in this sequel when Croft returns to Palos, only to discover the council of priests has named him chief spokesman for their god, Zitu, who traditionally must be a celibate and is barred from marriage. Even Princess Naia turns on him. But, as John J. Pierce says in Foundations of Science Fiction, "further wooing on a lofty astral plane overcomes her doubts." But Jason must defeat even more powerful armies in order to lift the marriage ban. To do so, he "brings the industrial revolution to Tammarizia, introducing such wonders as electric power, automobiles, airplanes, modem weapons, democratic government and baseball to a world previously at approximately a Babylonian level in its culture." As the editorial staff of Famous Fantastic Mysteries noted when they reprinted Mouthpiece, it is "an outstanding masterpiece of that belongs in every fantastic fan's collection."

"Second only to Burroughs' John Carter!" -Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. Unabridged ebook edition! Born in the pages of All Story magazine, the same magazine that gave John Carter birth, Palos of the Dog Star Pack is the novel that, historian and critic John J. Pierce writes, "established the parameters for a school of created-world sf in which isolated heroes are transported to exotic worlds for more or less exotic adventures." The book's protagonist, Jason Croft, travels mentally to a world of Sirius, where he encounters romance and adventure. As Sam Moskowitz writes in Under the Moons of Mars, "He takes possession of the powerful body of Jason of Nodhur, a handsome but feeble-minded youth, at the moment of death, and sets out to win the hand of Naia, princess of Tamarizia. His knowledge of earthly science results in the advancement of the people of Palos." Moskowitz adds, "The story was fascinating and well told, in the precise tradition of Edgar Rice Burrough's John Carter of Mars series." J. U. Giesy's Palos of the Dog Star Pack is truly a novel in the tradition of here is classic science fiction with all the unbridled adventure, color, romance and action of Burroughs, Leigh Brackett, C. L. Moore, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and the legendary golden age pulp, Planet Stories. It even bears, as the author said in another context, "philosophic lessons interwoven in the narrative." The 1960s hardcover Avalon edition, from which most ebook editions take their text was cut by more than a third, destroying the author's style and the story's logic. Now you can read the unabridged, original text of Palos of the Dog Star Pack as the author intended! And look for its two sequels! Special Introduction about the author and book.

Giesy, John Ulrich was born on August 6, 1877 in Chillicothe, Ohio, United States. Son of William Sommers and Anna Kate Hutton (Heckerman) Giesy.
Doctor of Medicine Starling Medical College, Columbus, Ohio, 1898.
He was one of the early writers in the Sword and Planet genre, with his Jason Croft series. He collaborated with Junius B. Smith on many of his stories. Robert Weinberg"s website described the series of stories starring Jason Croft as "ne of the most popular scientific romance trilogies published in All-Story Weekly magazine of the first quarter of the 20th century." Giesy also wrote for other pulp magazines such as Argosy, Adventure and Weird Tales.
Giesy"s 1915 novel All Foreign His Country is a story of a future invasion of the United States by the Japanese.
Because All Foreign His Country depicts Japanese-Americans living in California helping the invasion, some critics have cited it as an example of the anti-Japanese racism that ultimately resulted in the Internment of Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor. Giesy lived in Salt Lake City where he met Junius B. Smith, with whom he co-authored a large number of stories, including those featuring the occult detective.
