Career

Admitted to Albany (New York) bar, 1831. Attache American legation, London, England., 1831, nicknamed “Prince John” and “Young Fox” by American press. Member “Albany Regency,” 1834.

Law examiner, Albany, also law partner of James McKnown, 1837-1845. Attorney general (Democrat) New York, 1845, prosecuted anti-rent cases. Attorney in famous Edwin Forrest divorce suit.

Lobbyist New York Legislature, denounced Fugitive Slave Law. Delegate to nearly all Democratic state convs., 1836-1848. Wrote pamphlet “The Syracuse Convention,” 1847.

An organizer “Barnburners,” splinter party of Democratic Party, New York, 1843-1848. Supported compromise measures of 1850.
