John was chairman and CEO of Aetna Inc. from 2000 to 2006 and is currently Executive Chairman. Prior to joining Aetna, he served as President and Chief Officer of Mount Sinai NYU Health. Before the Mount Sinai NYU Health merger, Dr. Rowe was President of The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He serves as a Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Prior to joining Mount Sinai in 1988, Dr. Rowe was a Professor of Medicine and the founding Director of the Division on Aging at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Gerontology at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital.
He has authored over 200 scientific publications, primarily in the physiology of the aging process, and a leading textbook of geriatric medicine. He was Director of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Aging and recently co-authored Successful Aging. He served on the Board of Governors of the American Board of Internal Medicine and as President of the Gerontological Society of America and as a member of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. He is a member of the National Academy of Science’s Institute of Medicine and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Connecticut.
Dr. Rowe is a member of the MBL’s Board of Trustees and was a member of the MBL's Council of Visitors from 1995 to 2000.
John is a brilliant physician and author. His books have been a source of information for readers interested in the biological aspects of aging, from clinicians and gerontologists to policymakers to the elderly and their families. Rowe's work has helped to alter our society's negative views of old age, especially in his book for general audiences, Successful Aging.
John married Valerie Ann DelTufo on August 10, 1968. They have three daughters: Meredith, Abigail and Rebecca.
