Merchant in Cincinnati, 1840-1870. A founder Young Men’s Merc. library association, Cincinnati, president, 1843. Organized Ellis & McAlpin (became a leading merc. firm), Cincinnati, 1847.

President Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton R.R. A founder, president 1st National Bank of Cincinnati, 1863-1869. Head of Winslow, Lanier & Company.

New York City, 1870-1883. Negotiated $40,000,000 loan for N.P. Railway, 1881. Mediated agreement between Erie R.R. and Atlantic & Great Western R.R.

Helped purchase Panama R.R. for Panama Canal Company. President 3d National Bank of New York City, 1876.
