Farmer, since 1983; founder, president National Black Farmers Association (NBFA), since 1995. Member Virginia Tobacco Indemnification & Community Revitalization Commission, 1999—2001, Governor-Elect Tim Kaine's Policy Committee on Agricultural & Forestry, 2001—2002.
Achievements include founded the association to fight the racism in the United States Department of Agriculture loan programs. Led class action law suit of 1000 black farmers against the United States Department of Agriculture in 1997 that led to a historic agreement in 1999. Staged a protest in 2003 on behalf of black farmers by traveling 200-plus miles from his farm in Virginia to Washington on a wagon pulled by his two mules, Struggle and 40 Acres.
Member of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
